The Marietta Board of REALTORS® would like to congratulate Kim Quillen of 511 Third Street as our Home of The Month for June 2026!

Some houses simply have a way of speaking to you, and for homeowner Kim Quillen, 511 Third Street did exactly that.

The lot was originally purchased in 1885, and the home itself was built in 1887 by the Hoppman family, who immigrated from Germany. Over the course of nearly 140 years, the house has remarkably had only three owners. The Hoppman family owned the home for generations, including a daughter who lived there into her nineties.

Known for her creativity, she even hosted porcelain painting classes inside the home. The next owners, the Flanders family, completed several updates while preserving much of its historic charm before passing it on to Kim.

Ironically, the home was the exact opposite of what Kim thought she wanted. She had been searching for a smaller, single-level home that would be easy to maintain. Yet the moment she stepped inside 511 Third Street, her plans changed. “It felt like home,” she said.

What immediately captured her attention was the stunning woodwork throughout the house. The original Hoppman family milled much of the lumber from trees that once stood on the property, creating custom trim from cherry, walnut, butternut, and pine. While all of the craftsmanship is impressive, the rich cherry trim remains the home’s most striking feature.

Though spacious, Kim says the home never feels overly large. Originally a three-bedroom home, one bedroom has been transformed into a spacious walk-in closet adjoining the bathroom, creating a layout that better suits modern living while maintaining the home’s character.

Outside, Kim enjoys the large backyard that stretches all the way to a quiet dead-end alley. Inside, tall windows fill the home with natural light, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere throughout the day.

Since purchasing the property, Kim has invested countless hours into restoring and improving the home. Major projects have included new gutters, refinished flooring, updated bathrooms, all-new plumbing, complete electrical rewiring, and new light fixtures throughout. The kitchen is currently undergoing renovations, and beautiful crown molding is being added to the bedrooms. While one bedroom required drywall due to previous water damage, Kim has preserved many of the original plaster walls whenever possible.

One particularly special feature is the home’s wallpaper. In some rooms, sections of the wallpaper are believed to be original to the house—an impressive testament to both the craftsmanship and care the home has received over the decades.
